− | Театр - це не нудно, це прекрасно!
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Theatre is not boring, it's wonderful!
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | I am pleased to present you an interview with Maria Minieva, a student of the Ivan Karpenko-Karyi National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television in Kyiv.
| + | |
− | She didn't give up after her first failure when applying to Karpenko-Karyi University. Her dream of becoming an actor was stronger than any obstacles. So, after studying for a year at the National Academy of Management Personnel of Culture and Arts, she tried again and this time succeeded.
| + | |
− | Maria is a student who has experience in filming. While being an actor in the first year of studing is not very common, she was lucky enough to get a role in the famous Ukrainian TV series called “The Blind”. She has also starred in the play "Salvation" while studying at NAKKKiM [National Academy of Management Personnel of Culture and Arts].

− | - Before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there was a situation when actors from Russia were often invited to Ukrainian projects (TV series, films). Why do you think this was? Was it an inferiority syndrome or was it really about acting?
| + | |
− | - In my opinion, there was an inferiority complex here. But I think that Russian actors were invited simply because they are more recognizable in Ukraine. Both Ukrainians and Russians know them, and this makes it possible to reach a larger audience and make more box office. Unfortunately, because of this, our Ukrainian actors didn’t have an opportunity to develop.
| + | |
− | - In general, how do you see the future of Ukrainian cinema?
| + | |
− | - Of course, I would like to hope that it will develop rapidly! That perhaps some Western partners would be involved in the development of our cinema. But now, even during the war, we can see a lot of Ukrainian projects: high-quality and interesting ones with great actors. The directors of these films are also great, and so I think that if we are able to create high-quality products even during the war, then I think we will have a great future in this field.
| + | |
− | - Are there any works that you have highlighted for yourself in recent years?
| + | |
− | - I remember a movie that is very relevant now, “Shchedryk” [A name of the Christmas song known in the English-speaking countries as “Carol of the Bells”]. This is a Ukrainian-Polish film, and it describes the events of the Second World War and a family that took in various children, including Jews, during all these events, during the Soviet occupation and then the German occupation. This movie touched me very deeply because it relates to the events that are happening now, and it resonates with me. The movie is incredibly well produced, the acting is top notch, so I strongly advise you to watch this movie, especially during the Christmas holidays, because it is about “Shchedryk”, which is our Ukrainian heritage. I think every Ukrainian should be proud of it. That's why I recommend it.

− | - Who are your role models among theatre actors, whom do you admire?
| + | |
− | - Of course, this is my master, Natalia Konstiantynivna Dolia, People's Artist of Ukraine, leading actress of the Lesia Ukrainka National Academic Theatre. She is probably the number one example for me, because she is my mentor, and the way she teaches us appeals to me very much. I also like the theatre actress from the Ivan Franko Theatre, Tetiana Mikhina. I have watched her two performances: "Stolen Happiness” and “A Streetcar Named “Desire””. Her performance really sank into my soul. She made me walk through her character's story with her.
| + | |
− | - Do most people who go into acting imagine acting in movies?
| + | |
− | - Not always. Among my groupmates, there are a lot of people who see themselves only in theatre. I didn't really expect this myself. I thought that the majority would be oriented towards cinema, but a lot of people see themselves in theatre, adore only theatre, and simply cannot imagine themselves on a movie set.
| + | |
− | - How can you describe people who think that theatre is boring?
| + | |
− | - These people are inexperienced, with a narrow mindset, unable to focus their attention on the emotions of others, at least for 2-3 hours.
| + | |
− | Although, it's really hard. Given our modern realities.
| + | |
− | If you take TikTok, for example, when every video there is a dose of dopamine. Sometimes it's hard for me to focus my attention on a two-hour movie too.
| + | |
− | I don't go to the theatre every day, I don't have the energy and the desire to come to the theatre, watch a play, understand something, analyze something. But the performances are designed to provoke the audience to reflect, to make them think, to reconsider something.
| + | |
− | - How do you see the future of Ukrainian theatre? How do you envision it?
| + | |
− | - Nowadays, there is indeed an increase in people's interest in theatre. It is connected with the popularization of performances on TikTok, which undoubtedly makes theatres more popular and accessible.
| + | |
− | However, there is also a problem: people come to performances to be in trend without really trying to understand the play. They post stories on Instagram and TikTok: "Oh, I recently went to see “The Witch of Konotop”. It was great! I also attended a performance by Ivan Uryvskyi”. Right now, people are going crazy for Mr. Uryvskyi on social media. He has recently presented the play “Maria Stewart”. There were no posters, no cast, nothing, but the tickets were sold out in January.
| + | |
− | On the one hand, this is good, because thanks to TikTok, the theatre is becoming more popular. The plays are getting promoted and recommended to the wider audience, especially young people.
| + | |
− | However, such a shallow attitude can lead to insincere perception of the theatre. Some viewers are not ready for analysis and reflection, they just want to stay on topic.
| + | |
− | - Maria, which directors can you recommend?
| + | |
− | - Davyd Petrosian - his performances impress the audience. For example, "Othello" at the Lesia Ukrainka National Academic Theatre, where Natalia Dolia plays the main role, as well as "Earth" at the Ivan Franko Theatre and "The Process" at Podil Theatre.
| + | |
− | Dmytro Bogomazov - another talented director. His performances at the Ivan Franko Theatre can be considered to be leading. In particular, “The Stolen Happiness” and "Sing, Lola, Sing".
| + | |
− | Kyrylo Kashlikov - artistic director of the Lesia Ukrainka National Theatre and director. His play "The Mysterious Night Murder of a Dog" is art in its purest form. You should also watch “The Cripple of Inishmaan Island”.
| + | |
− | Yevhen Shcherban - a young director who will amaze you. His play "Fake" at the Lesia Ukrainka Theatre is something special.
| + | |
− | - How do you choose a play to watch?
| + | |
− | - It depends on your mood. Maybe you want to see a comedy or something sad. There are also performances in the absurd genre. If you want to get acquainted with the classics, I recommend choosing a performance based on Shakespeare's works, for example, "Romeo and Juliet" or "Othello". If it's a comedy, you might like the play "Number 13". I also recommend watching the musical "Sing, Lola, Sing".
| + | |
− | It's a great pleasure to watch "Decameron" in the Young Theatre. It's performed by the fourth-year students. They also put on a performance of “Cabaret”. Also, “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Uryvskyi. It will make you think about women's fate.
| + | |
− | - What would you like to achieve with this interview?
| + | |
− | - Well, of course, I would like people to become really interested in theatre, and not just sit through a performance. It is important that the work of actors, directors and everyone who works on a performance is appreciated: costumers, set designers, scenographers, lighting and sound directors and playwrights. It's a lot of work and creativity. The process of creation is very energizing in itself, but receiving feedback from the audience is twice as energizing. Theatre is not boring, it's wonderful!
